MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT |
|
Good news to report. PECCTAC has received a 3-year commitment
from County Council for us to provide Visitors Information Services.
We want to thank Council and the Economic Development Officer
Dan Taylor for their continued support and partnership.
I want to encourage all members to attend the All Candidates
meeting on October 7th 2008. This is the time to question all
the Candidates in this year’s Federal election on October
14th 2008.
Our monthly Meet and Greets have started again where we have
a one hour social and then members can introduce themselves and
tell us what is new with them. I also update members on what has
been happening at PECCTAC. The County has been highlighted in
several newspapers and magazines this summer and we have seen
an increase in visitors of 500 a month for July and August. With
all the planned events I am sure we will have a busy Fall season.

MESSAGE
FROM OUR SUMMER STUDENTS |

“Do you have mosquitoes,
and are the cedar trees dangerous?”
Over the five years in which I have worked in the PECCTAC office,
I can truly say that this job has really helped me develop my sense
of humour. When I first began working in this office, I received calls
about what people’s horoscopes are, and what the temperature
of the water is at the Sandbanks Provincial Park. Now, although I
still receive the same calls, I have become the office “phone
book,” as Jan likes to say, and am able to give out local numbers
without even having to look them up.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the
members, non-members and tourists that visited, called the office,
or even brought in cookies, coffee and jam. Those little gestures
and the smiles of satisfied individuals are a big part of the reason
that I continued to come back every summer. But of course, the main
individuals whom I would like to thank are Jan DeMille, Lawrie Ackerman,
and the Board of Directors. They took me under their wing long ago
when I was just a nervous sixteen year old, and continued to watch
over me as I transformed into a twenty-one year old “Tourism
Ambassador.”
Growing up in the County itself was an amazing lifestyle and being
able to learn much more about it while working at PECCTAC has really
helped me appreciate its beauty and the beautiful people within
it. Thank you all for an amazing five years.
Sincerely, Sarah Cobb

“Hi. I hear that there is
some sort of island around here…. There’s supposed to
be lots of wineries… Have you heard of it? How do I get there?”
Aside from trying my very hardest to keep a straight
face as I replied “Go no further, you’re standing on
it”, I found answering this question and many of the other
commonly asked questions here in the office, an enjoyable task.
This was due at least in part to the unimaginable questions I was
asked on a regular basis – why just today I was asked where
to go to milk a cow- but also to the friendliness of the people
who came in every day. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful
County that makes people happy when they come and spend their time
here. There were, of course, a few grumps along the way (especially
those visitors I had to tell EVERYONE was full) but I found that
the happy thank you’s, and smiles, given when I managed to
help someone find their way, very rewarding. One aspect of working
here in the office this summer that I really found useful was my
ability to practice my French. I don’t think a day went by
that I didn’t get a chance to use it. Now I’ll have
to work on learning Spanish and German too! I would also like to
thank all of you members for being so friendly when I called you
every week to see what you had available. It was a great help when
you called us here to tell us what you had available, and very nice
when you popped in to say hello. It was a pleasure working with
all of you this summer.
Sincerely, Elyse Platt

YOUR CHAMBER @ WORK
|
Earlier this year your Chamber presented a resolution to the Ontario
Chamber of Commerce regarding the journeyperson to apprenticeship
Ratio.
1. Re-align ratios in restricted trades to allow for one-to-one
ratios between apprentices and journeypersons.
We have received a letter from the honourable John Milloy, Minister
of Training, Colleges and Universities to say:
“we will take your comments and concerns into consideration
as we continue to work with the Provincial Advisory Committees to
examine apprenticeship ratio’s”.
Your Chamber will continue to monitor this very important issue.

Got QUESTIONS about Merchant Services ?
Get ANSWERS from your Chamber of Commerce !
Over the past few months, business owners have been made aware of
some "industry-wide" changes in the payment card industry
that may affect their debit and credit card processing costs. In
response to your enquiries, the Prince Edward County Chamber of
Tourism & Commerce has been working with Regional Merchant Services
Specialist, Maureen Watt, to better understand how these changes
might impact our valued members.
If you are currently taking advantage of the Chamber of Commerce
Preferred Pricing Program, you will continue to benefit from the
savings inherent in this plan. If you are not currently participating,
it may be a worthwhile consideration! Please note, merchants on
this program may deposit funds to the financial institution of their
choice.
To answer ANY questions you may have about recent developments in
the payment card industry, or – to get a 'FREE' comparative

| WHAT’S YOUR OPINION? |
Councillor Burris has asked for PECCTAC’s assistance in getting
Bell Canada to expand Prince Edward County’s local calling
area to include Consecon/Carrying Place. The Municipality has been
trying for 10 years to get this in place. There is a process that
Bell Canada has devised to create an expanded Local Calling Area
(LCA).
PECCTAC has contacted Quinte West & Belleville & District
Chamber’s of Commerce to get their input and possible endorsement
of having a Local Area to include:
Belleville; Bloomfield; Brighton; Deseronto; Frankford; Madoc; Marmora;
Picton; Stirling; Thurlow; Trenton; Tweed; Wellington and Wooler.
How do you feel about an expanded Local Calling Area?
Please go to the PECCTAC website and click
on the Blog to voice your opinion! |

PECCTAC’s polling question……
The success of any rural economy is dependent on local businesses
and residents to shop regionally. Having toll free service throughout
our region will encourage individuals and businesses to shop regionally.Bell
Canada can provide a significant opportunity to make a huge economic
contribution to the Quinte region by expanding the local calling
area for the Quinte region to include:
Belleville, Bloomfield; Brighton; Deseronto; Carrying Place, Consecon,
Frankford; Madoc; Marmora; Picton; Stirling; Thurlow; Trenton; Tweed,
Wellington; and Wooler.
+ Strongly agree

I would pay a higher monthly service fee in order to have Bell
Canada expand the Local Calling Area.

Your Bay of Quinte Tourist Council has been busy this summer.
The students at the 401 Kiosk report that visitors to the booth
totaled over 5,000 with the top visitor origins being the GTA, USA
and Quebec. The majority of visitors requested information on the
County!
The Bay of Quinte fishing map is going to be reprinted!
Lynne McMullen, Samlyn Enterprises, has been busy putting the new
map together. It is a great advertising and marketing opportunity
as this map will be taken to many travel and trade shows in Ontario
and Quebec.
Please see the enclosed information on this great advertising and
marketing opportunity. Do not delay in getting back to Lynne if
you want to participate.
